A TIKTOKER claimed he was charged for air when he rented a home from an Airbnb host.

Social media user @papiwhiterice posted a brief clip on the site just three days ago and it has already garnered over 174,000 views and hundreds of comments.

TikTok footage showed an air conditioner thermostat locked behind what appears to be a coin-operated safe.

The person who posted the clip added the text “When our Airbnb host charges you for the air”.

Although the location of the property is not mentioned, the brand of the safe is believed to be produced by a company in Madrid, Spain, according to the Daily Dot.

The safe is described on the brand’s website as a consumption limiter “to save and control the cost of electricity in hotels, inns, rural lodges and all types of accommodation. They work by time, coins or tokens.

From previous TikToker videos, it looks like he spent a month traveling in the Iberian country, indicating that the Airbnb was in Spain.

Many commentators were also outraged.

“It’s crazy. My Airbnb in Cuba even had free AC and Wifi,” one said.

“I would have left and gone to the hotel,” another commenter.

“Instant 1 star review,” added another.

Some had sympathy for the host, however, with one writing: “Yeah, it’s called electricity and it’s really expensive. Air is free, cooling is not.

While one added: ‘You have no idea how expensive electricity is here. People literally become poor because of it.

A September 2021 Times article claimed that the Spanish government was facing “a growing crisis after months of rising electricity bills that have led to popular discontent at some of the highest tariffs in Europe”.

The cost of electricity in Spain had reached “historic highs”, with customers paying an average of €140 ($159) per megawatt hour”, a threefold increase from the previous year.
