A study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences led by Michael Moore at Washington University in St. Louis reveals that male dragonflies have consistently evolved less breeding coloring in areas with warmer climates.
“Our study shows that the wing pigmentation of male dragonflies evolves so steadily in response to climate that it is among the most predictable evolutionary responses ever observed for a mating-related trait,” said Moore, who is postdoctoral fellow at the Living Earth Collaborative. .
“This work reveals that traits related to mating can be just as important to how organisms adapt to their climate as traits related to survival,” he said.
Many dragonflies have spots of dark black pigmentation on their wings which they use to woo potential mates and intimidate rivals.
“Beyond its reproductive function, having a lot of dark pigmentation on the wings can heat dragonflies up to 2 degrees Celsius, a pretty big change!” Moore said, noting that this would roughly equate to a 3.5 degree Fahrenheit change. “While this pigmentation can help dragonflies find mates, additional heating could also cause them to overheat in already hot places.”
The researchers wanted to know if this additional heating could force dragonflies to develop different amounts of wing pigmentation in different climates.
For this study, scientists created a database of 319 dragonfly species using field guides and citizen scientist observations. They examined the wing ornamentation shown in the photographs submitted to iNaturalist and gathered information on climatic variables in the locations where the dragonflies were observed. The researchers also directly measured the amount of wing pigmentation on individual dragonflies from nearly 3,000 iNaturalist observations in a target group of 10 selected species. For dragonflies of each of these 10 species, scientists assessed how populations differed in the hot and cold parts of their geographic range.
Whether they’re comparing species in warmer or cooler geographies, or comparing populations of the same species living in warmer areas versus cooler areas, the researchers found the same: male dragonflies almost always responded to warmer temperatures by developing less wing pigmentation.
Sorting the observations in another way, the researchers determined that male dragonflies spotted in warmer years tended to have less wing pigmentation than male dragonflies of the same species in cooler years (the database included observations recorded during the period 2005-19).
âSince our planet is expected to continue to warm, our results suggest that male dragonflies may eventually need to adapt to global climate change by changing wing coloring less,â Moore said.
The study includes projections, based on global warming scenarios, which indicate that it will be beneficial for male wing pigmentation to decrease further as the Earth warms over the next 50 years.
But the changes do not happen in the same way for both sexes.
âUnlike males, female dragonflies show no major changes in the way their wing coloring changes with the current climate. We don’t yet know why males and females are so different, but it shows that we shouldn’t. not assume that genders will adapt to climate change the same way, âMoore said.
Dragonflies have different amounts of pigment on their wings which help males and females of the same species identify with each other. The Technical and Safety Standards Authority (TSSA) rolled out the new online form on its website effective July 1, when new requirements came into effect under the Technical Standards and Safety Act 2000 Ontario Regulation 220/01: Boilers and Pressure Vessels and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) B51: 19 Code for boilers, pressure vessels and pressure piping.
This applies to steam boilers, water boilers, pressure vessels and refrigeration equipment using ammonia, carbon dioxide, refrigerants of group A1 and all other refrigerants.
The deadline to submit the online form is September 30.
First announced last year, the exemption that was previously in place for agricultural BPVs was revoked last summer due to growing safety concerns. The TSSA published detailed requirements for boilers, pressure vessels (BPVs), fittings and piping used for agricultural purposes earlier this year. These requirements began on July 1, 2021.
The TSSA says it will use the information gathered to document existing devices in the province and conduct a risk-based assessment. In addition, they âwill establish a priority list to plan an initial inspection over five years. He told the inquest that at the start of his tenure on city council, he was part of a five-person “means of escape” team that considered building safety in the event of a fire. But Mr Hanson explained that that team was reduced to three and later he was the only one as the board was unable to replace people who retired or moved.
He said that “the redesign was based on the need to reduce the cost of building control” and then his workload “doubled”.
His comments echo complaints from his boss John Hoban, who told the inquest last September that he had become “inundated” with work and was reviewing 130 projects at a time.
Mr. Hanson read the Smoke Control Association (SCA) guidelines on smoke control systems, particularly a section that states that when installing systems, they should be tested to identify “dead spots.” .
He said he viewed the SCA guidelines as a âhelpful guideâ when dealing with concerns about particular systems, but that dead spot testing was not standard practice.
The RBKC employee said this was not done as it would normally be taken up by a building regulation engineering group, or “BREG engineer”. RBKC’s BREG engineer was made redundant in 2015.
Investigation lawyer Kate Grange QC said: “I think what you are saying is that because you did not have an electrical mechanical engineer this part of the SCA guidelines did not followed, is that correct? “

He told the inquest that when he learned that the council’s BREG engineer had been fired, he requested a meeting with senior officials from the RBKC’s building control department to explain his concerns. He said: âAfter this job I really felt it was so necessary and since then I have supported the board to rehire one or at least two mechanical electrical engineers.
âI think it’s very important when we are dealing with these mechanical ventilation systems, I would have felt a lot more confident in this job if I had had a BREG engineer sitting next to me to evaluate the system. “
Ms Grange explained to Mr Hanson the advice of the SCA and explained that in approving the smoke control system he had failed to meet a number of criteria that would prove the system was working.
Another failure highlighted by Ms. Grange concerned the consideration of partitioning and internal fire propagation.

COLUMBUS – A move to ban natural gas hookups in new buildings in New York and San Francisco has prompted Ohio lawmakers to rush to prevent similar efforts here.
House Bill 201, promulgated by Gov. Mike DeWine on Thursday, prohibits municipalities from banning customers from using natural gas or propane. The change was passed even though no city in Ohio currently has such a ban and current law allows customers to choose their energy source.
Still, proponents of the change say removing natural gas from the mix would dramatically increase the price of energy for Ohioans.
âIt would be an incredible problem for people across Buckeye State if we didn’t come out in front of this,â said Senator Rob McColley, R-Napoleon.
Natural gas is a fossil fuel that forms beneath the earth’s surface and, when burned, emits carbon dioxide emissions.
For supporters of natural gas bans in California and elsewhere, the restrictions are aimed at curbing climate change.

But Rep. Jason Stephens, R-Kitts Hill, introduced his bill to ban those bans to ensure customer choice.

Opponents say the change removes local control and gives natural gas an advantage not offered to renewable energy resources. Meanwhile, lawmakers passed Senate Bill 52, which would add another hurdle to wind and solar projects in the state.

LAKE PLACID – The Board of Directors of the National Olympic Regional Development Authority welcomed a new member to its ranks on Friday, approved a list of contracts and equipment purchases, and thanked ORDA employees for their work during the coronavirus pandemic.
The ORDA Board of Directors met at the Mountain Pass Lodge of the Mount Van Hoevenberg Olympic Sports Complex for the first time in person since March 2020.
The new ORDA board member is Frank Cardinale, representing Ulster County. Cardinale was chairman of the Ulster County Democratic Committee. He replaces Thomas Keegan, who died in May of a heart attack at the age of 50.
The Board of Directors passed a resolution thanking ORDA staff for their work throughout the pandemic and approved a one-year contract renewal with Centerplate for concession services at ORDA sites. .
The board of directors also approved a change order of $ 215,000, bringing the total estimated cost of the improvements to Mount Van Hoevenberg carried out by the Pike Company to more than $ 33.3 million. McKenzie chose to focus on leukemia because of its relationship with the chemical benzene. It is also a known carcinogen, most closely associated with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), which occurs mainly in adults.
Unlike AML, McKenzie says little is known about the environmental causes of ALL, the most common type of childhood leukemia. âBenzene hasn’t necessarily been involved in ALL, but that hasn’t been ruled out either,â she says. This study will examine whether there is a potential link between the two.
The new study will draw its control group from the Colorado birth registry and its case group from the Colorado Central Cancer Registry. The control group will exclude children who have been diagnosed with any type of cancer other than ALL. Similar to the pilot study, McKenzie hopes to determine whether children living near oil and gas sites – and therefore closer to areas where benzene emits – are more likely than other children to develop ALL.
âThe reason we chose children is that the time between exposure and cancer onset (the latency period) is much shorter in children than in adults,â explains McKenzie. The primary age group for the study is children aged two to nine, although McKenzie is also considering an exploratory goal to examine infants aged zero to one.
The new study will have several advantages over the pilot study. In addition to drawing his control group from the birth register, he will also take into account not only a child’s proximity to an oil and gas site, but also the intensity of activity at these sites.

The second objective of the study is to explore another potential reason for the apparent increase in diagnoses of ALL in children near oil and gas sites: a social and epidemiological phenomenon called population mixing.

Vaccines are a game changer

The problem with net zero is that it focuses on offsets rather than reductions in carbon emissions. This allows carbon emissions to continue, and it allows business as usual to continue.
It’s a delaying tactic that the fossil fuel industries have mastered (see also: climate denial).
As many activists have argued for decades, avoiding the current global warming requires “system change, not climate change”.
Another area of ââconcern regarding emission pledges is the lack of intermediate targets. If the goal is to reduce emissions by an amount X by, say, 2030, what is the benchmark of progress for 2022, for 2023, etc., and who will check that?

The report has been endorsed by more than sixty environmental organizations, including the Institute for Policy Studies, OilWatch, and the Third World Network.
The report draws attention to what it calls “dangerous distractions from big polluters,” which include “geoengineering technologies and deeply flawed schematics.” Technologies include biomass or bioenergy, which draws energy from natural sources, including the burning of trees; and, and carbon capture and storage, by sucking CO2 from the air and storing it in the soil.

Globally, there is not enough land available to accommodate plans by governments and businesses to plant trees as compensation. Net zero also exacerbates global and historical inequalities. It enables nations and businesses in the Global North to continue to burn fossil fuels while using the forests and lands of the Global South as carbon sinks.
âThe proclamations of Net Zero goals are dangerous disappointments,â said Lidy Nacpil, coordinator of the Asian Peoples’ Movement on Debt and Development. âNet Zero sounds ambitious and visionary, but it actually allows big polluters and rich governments to keep emitting. David Campbell, CEO of Evergy, called the bill a âGrid Act,â as he recapped the financial toll many Kansans have faced after the freezing temperatures.
âThe Grid Act is a big step forward. It is an important step in the energy policy of the State. This will help Evergy become more sustainable while saving customers money, âCampbell said.
The law has already been in force since April thanks to swift action by lawmakers to get it passed by both the House and the Senate. It allows the Kansas Corporation Commission to authorize the securitization of certain utility production facilities, qualified extraordinary costs, and the issuance of securitized utility rate bonds. These companies would be able to refinance some of the expenses they have incurred since the storm.
âSecuritization allows us to access loans at low interest rates to repay part of the balances on the books. So at the same time, the proceeds from that will allow us to reinvest in Kansas into the power grid, âCampbell said.
He said the law gives utilities a way forward to minimize the cost impact for customers when they have to retire aging production assets or deal with extraordinary costs associated with extreme events.
Extreme weather conditions have led to statewide power outages to save energy and natural gas. Some Kansas communities have seen massive bills amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs.

Secretary Canfield, who has headed the Alabama Department of Commerce since 2011, received the AGP’s highest individual honor, the Rainer Bauer Award. OVERLAND PARK, KAN. – Kansas Dairy Ingredients (KDI) Cheese Co., a manufacturer and distributor of ultrafiltered condensed dairy products, has announced plans to invest $ 45 million to expand its business in southwestern Kansas.
The plant expansion in Hugoton, Kan., Will include investments to produce American-style, Italian-style, Hispanic-style cheese and European-style cheese and butter. KDI Cheese Co. said the expansion will be “environmentally responsible,” as the company commits to investing more in water harvesting and environmentally responsible construction practices.

Credit scores for prime loans
There is no commonly accepted definition of the term “prime loan”. Each lender is free to set its own standards for loans it qualifies as “premium”.
But the term generally means a loan that offers the best possible deal to a consumer. It usually comes with low interest rates and sometimes other privileges.
There is one exception to this description of “best possible offer”. Some lenders may offer very high yield loans and then the best possible deals are given to those borrowers. But any prime loan is, by definition, attractive.
What scores qualify for blue chip loans?
FICO is the company behind the most widely used credit scoring technologies. It categorizes credit scores as follows:
800+ – “Exceptional”. Surprisingly, 20 percent of Americans have a score of 800 or higher. And 1% have one in 850, which is the highest it can get. Only 1% of those with a score of 800+ are likely to default on a loan, so lenders love these borrowers and can afford to give them great deals.
740-799 – “Very good.” You are still well above average and there is only a 2% chance that you will default. So lenders still love you, and almost all of them are likely to see you as a prime loan candidate. Twenty-three percent of consumers belong to this group.
670-739 – “Good.” There is an 8% chance that your loan is in default, which means that only certain lenders are likely to consider you eligible for a prime loan. Twenty-four percent of the population belongs to this group.
It should be noted that most of us have dozens of different credit scores. This is because there are different rating system providers, different credit bureaus, and different versions of industry specific rating systems. So, for example, an auto lender may use a proprietary and modified version that can better predict defaults on auto loans.
On top of that, some lenders have stayed with older “legacy” versions which will score different from more modern systems. This means that you shouldn’t assume that the score you get from a credit score service will be that seen by a potential lender.
Who gets bad loans?
You would think that bad credit loans would only be offered to those with very low credit rating. But some lenders will offer these loans even to those with fair credit scores. With a larger down payment, an applicant with a credit score of less than 620 can still get a Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac mortgage.
Here’s how FICO defines the two lower ranges:
580-669 – “Fair”. Twenty-eight percent of people in this score range will default on their loans, and they represent 16 percent of the population. Lenders are therefore wary. If you shop around, you might find a nice loan source that will lend you on better terms than a bad credit loan. But there is no guarantee
579 and less – “Poor”. Over 60 percent of borrowers in this group default on their loans, and they represent 16 percent of the population. Faced with these risks of default, most lenders will automatically deny requests. Those who agree are required to charge exorbitant interest rates to cover their losses

Do you have a thin file?
Many people have low scores through no fault of their own. Some have had bad luck: a period of unemployment or illness, perhaps.
Others simply have too little information on their credit reports for scoring algorithms to properly calculate their creditworthiness. The industry calls this having a “thin file”.
And this can be a particular problem for young people who haven’t borrowed much yet. It can also affect older people who haven’t borrowed in the past few years. But non-borrowers of any age may be affected.
It might seem like a trap: you can’t borrow without a decent credit score, and you can’t get a decent credit score without borrowing. A secured credit card can be a great place to start in building your credit. You must make a deposit to the card issuer and can then charge for purchases up to your deposit amount.
And you may have to pay interest when you “borrow” your own money. But, by providing your card reports to the big three credit bureaus, your score should increase fairly quickly.
Difference in cost between prime loans and bad loans
The higher your credit score, the less likely you are to pay off all of your loans. This applies to everything: from mortgages to credit cards and auto loans to home equity lines of credit.
As you can imagine, the cumulative effect of a lower score over a lifetime adds up. Some could end up dropping a hundred thousand dollars over this time period. If you are a big borrower, do it in the hundreds of thousands.
How your score affects your mortgage costs
FICO has a calculator that allows you to calculate the different costs of a new mortgage based on your credit score. The following calculations are based on mortgage rates as of mid-June 2018, but they will likely have changed since.
The Experian credit bureau estimated in January 2018 that the national average mortgage debt was $ 201,811. So let’s say someone borrows $ 200,000 with a 30-year fixed rate mortgage. The calculator indicates that someone with a score of 760-850 could get the following offer:

In other words, the borrower with the lowest score would throw over $ 70,000 in additional credit charges over the life of their loan.
Auto loans and others
But it’s not just mortgage payments that are affected by a score. FICO says that a person with excellent credit borrowing $ 10,000 in the form of a 60-month auto loan could pay $ 1,076 in interest over the five-year term. But the same loan would cost someone with a score between 500 and 589 $ 4,620 in interest, more than four times as much!
Suppose you have had eight auto loans in your lifetime. You would have lost almost $ 30,000. And, of course, it’s not just mortgages and auto loans. You’ll pay more for every dollar you borrow – and maybe more for your rent and insurance premiums.

Average credit scores probably don’t matter much to you. You are mainly interested in your own.
But Time Money published an analysis by age group in April 2017 that lets you know how you are doing compared to your peers:

60 years and over: 743
The average score of all Americans reached 700 in 2017 for the very first time.
The lowest scores of young people
Why are young people less well? It is probably not because they are fickle.
For starters, they can have thin files. But they also won’t yet have a high median age for their open accounts, which is 15% of a FICO score.
And they may not have such a good “mix” of revolving credit (mainly credit and credit cards) and installment loans, such as mortgages, auto loans, and so on. This mixture represents 10 percent of a FICO score.
Regardless of your age, having a higher score can save you a lot of money. It’s worth taking this stuff seriously. You don’t want to live your whole life burdened with bad loans.
